So I've arrived at that point many of us come to where I own a good 30 - 40 maps. My dillema though is where to store them? They don't sit on a bookshelf neatly like a book, they pile up very well and I find myself just sticking them in bags to store them.

Where do you store your maps???

Depends on expected usage:

Local ones: on a handy bookshelf.
Commonly visited areas: in a drawer.
Rarely visited areas: in a box.

Numbers are approx: 20; 30; 100 (I have a lot of maps!)

In reply to jamesofdeath: Mine take up about 1m of bookshelf piled a foot high; but I need easy access to them from the desk. If I only needed them for use on the hill then they'd probably go in a storage box or three under the bed

For the newer maps that I use, in a lidded plastic storage box, all filed in order so that I can find them easily. Older ones that are unlikely to be used are stacked in a bookshelf.

I keep my maps on my book shelf, you know, like a book.
The trick is to have an appropriate shelf height and a good bookend.

In the library, of course.

They sit beautifully on a shelf if you put the spine (with the map number) pointing outwards, and you can then have them in numerical order:

I keep them on the bookshelf - that way I can take one down of an evening and just read it like a good book. They never get boring.

I keep all my maps in a large plastic underbed storage trolley-box-thing. My girlfriend has always been frightened of it, convinced it contained unspeakable porn, until I pulled out an OS explorer when I couldn't sleep.

In careful numeric order, 1:50s in one section, 1:25s in another. Ikea do these little wooden boxes with six small drawers in. If you get rid of the drawers you have a useful frame perfect for maps side by side and with horizontal divides so they don't cascade. I feel I may have taken map organisation a bit far ...

That's the important maps - the topos live in bookcases around the house.

In reply to jamesofdeath: I was in IKEA one day and there was a guy wandering around with a 1:50 map. I was a bit puzzled. Saw him a few times. Caught up with him again in furniture. He was looking at a "billy" bookshelf. Part of the Billy family of bits used to be an divider that divided the shelf into 8 parts. That 8 part divider was designed as a display feature.
Do you know what fits into them, on their side. Yes perfect for OS maps.

And yes I did buy one. Now years later as my map collection has expanded I went back to look for another one. They still do the "billy" bookshelf, but not the divider - so I made one.

Lots of maps, in numerical order.

I keep mine in my gear room, along with my guides. My gear room is upstairs in my garage (man-cave).

Maps likely to be used at any time (all Lakes and Snowdonia) are in the "library" (crate) in the campervan, along with associated climbing and scrambling guidebooks. All other maps are in the study on a bookshelf. When we go to Scotland we swap those for Snowdonia and keep the Lakes lot in in case of diverting due to weather or time, or if we want a quick stop off on the way home.

I keep mine on a bookshelf too, likewise in numerical order, although some of the most-used ones are tattered beyond recognition and my OH has a habit of marking routes on them in pink highlighter <scowls>

Have any other maps-in-numerical-order-liner-uppers noticed the new 1:25k maps are all different sizes and this makes keeping them neatly arranged difficult?

In reply to jamesofdeath: I keep mine in a stack in the cupboard. I repeatedly find that the one I want is the only one I can't find. When I eventually find it I find that the bit I want has been cut out from a previous trip. I've a mind to chuck the whole lot out and start again.

And then buy another copy before finding the first? I have three copies of some maps - but have had "duplicate exchanges" with friends on occasion too.

This is indeed a rather odd question. I have a complete set of UK OS Landrangers (except sheet 12 which I seem to have lost) plus a few duplicates and a couple of 1:25000's and Irish maps. They live quite happily in bookshelves in my study. They really don't take up much room at all - maybe seven or eight feet or so of shelf space - and don't fall over if you have a weighty bookend on each shelf.

In reply to jamesofdeath: Mine fit into my Ikea Billy bookcase. I've just counted my maps - 178. I buy maps of wherever I go, for practical reasons and as a souvenir.
I love maps. Give me the choice of any book or a map, and I'll go for the map every time
I visited the Scottish mountaineer Douglas Scott a few years ago, and his map collection was impressive, and they were strewn around, opened out on the kitchen table obviously still planning and dreaming into his eighties.

I just read a thread on becoming a guide so I envisaged a room full of fully equipped, tanned, european guides (people not books) and lots of maps.

In reply to jamesofdeath: Mine are stored on the bookshelf in order, plus the ones I use regularly for walking are ready to go, refolded to show the route and in plastic bags (to keep the rain off) with my walking gear.

I find a plastic storeage box deep enough for the maps to stand up in and wide enough for 2 maps wide works great. the more maps you have the bigger the box you buy.

Most of mine live in the hole in the nasty 80s TV stand thing I have that was probably meant for storing videos. Less important ones are in a box in the corner of the room.

There are nearly always at least one or two in the planning room. You know, the room with lots of big ceramic things in it, including a nice comfortable seat with a hole in the middle of it.

OS Maps in old boot boxes and rarely used as I tend to print from Memory Map as and when required.
A4 print-offs are then stored in plastic wallets in a ring binder, which does get used frequently.
