It's a learning curve isn't it? Like you though I am enjoying it and get out at every opportunity to practise. I'm looking forward to getting a dslr soon, just have to convince the misus! Here's some of mine from the last two weeks (is that allowed?!)...

This is more illustration than photo but is made up from photos taken primarily by myself and composited in photoshop. The face is from a self portrait and the skull is plastic one from ebay. I got the images of the goat horns from the flickr commons thing. All rammed together to create a "spoof" book cover for The Devil Rides Out.

I've nothing of the standard of most of those posted so far, but here are a few taken from the canoe this morning, on the Thames just outside Reading. Nature did most of the work!

I was desperately trying to keep the camera steady whilst drifting(Olympus Miu 1050 waterproof so a bit limiting, but I wouldn't have risked a DSLR in the canoe (again)!), and trying not to create ripples on the water.

Looking at your settings: You can try taking the ISO down to 100 to get a clearer image if youre shooting on a tripod. Was it windy at all? The overall pic looks a bit 'soft' and may have been down to some minor movement? If not a bit of post process sharpening could make it look a bit better? Otherwise very nicely exposed

Personally, on the composition front, Id have been tempted to get in closer to the darker treeline with glowing lights behind and emphasise it more, the paler trees and water are a bit cluttered perhaps? Do like the horizontal chimney smoke!

OP flash13 23 Jan 2012
In reply to Anni: to be honest i dont even know what white balance i shot this photo in which could have had a massive effect on the photo. i had a big iso to get a more accurate shutter speed for the correct exposure. its on my doorstep so i can play around with getting it right. it was a lot darker at that time than the picture suggests.

In reply to flash13:

Was this on a tripod or not? Night shots are better if you can use one, rather than just balancing on a wall etc, then you can lower the ISO all you want I try not to shoot at above 200 if I can help it!!

I also tend to leave WB on auto unless im shooting sunsets/sunrise shots, it sorts itself out quite happily for 99% of pics

OP flash13 23 Jan 2012
In reply to Anni: it was on a tripod but as you can tell from the smoke it was fairly windy, however the tripod is quite sturdy so it shouldnt have affected it too much. was a 30 second exposure.

It's not a big job, but you will need to buy some stuff to do it.

Or you could get a pro to do it (you'll be fine to do it yourself).

Just learning to use my DSLR, loving every minute of it. I had a go at waterdrop photography last night and was very pleased with the result. No fancy equipment, just the built in flash and a droplet of red coloured water into a bowl. I love the vortex of water under the 'spike' of water in the first picture.

Really like the "trees and street-light" shots - how do they look in b&w? Removing that familiar orange could be nicely abstracting

For once I got *very* lucky with the weather and potential subjects last Sunday - here's the four best:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/drupka/6865529851/

I struggle to choose between them, but probably the first and last... and Anni may notice a cheeky little homage to her macro shots in the third one!

Was in Madrid on Sunday with my better half and we decided to visit the Museo del Prado to view the world's biggest collection of Rubens masterpieces.

In the end we couldnt get there because of this angry bunch, nothing whatsoever to do with climbing or the outdoors, but possibly related to what will be happening on the streets of Britain in the near future.

Not photographed much contact sport before and never cage fighting (MMA). It was a wee bit tricky as the newsdesk wouldn't pay for a place on a ladder, so due to flash vs cage issues, I had to shoot mostly on available on my old 1dmkII which isn't exactly built for low light. Still they came out alright I reckon, I like the girl with her face covered in blood and the bloke pressed against the cage best (although the copywrite info is a bit annoying).

Hello all!!

Now that i have all of you photographers together i would like to ask you something and be honest i will not be offended, I've always loved photography and last year i bought a DSLR camera but... i don't know how to use photoshop the only thing i touch from the pictures is either the exposure, levels or the gamma stuff.... so because i don't know how to use it and i don't know where to start learning it i kind of lost a bit of interest and i take much less than before so my questions are...

Can you look at some of my pictures and tell me if i have any hope? if they are any good? i don't know about light, texture or anything of those things that you talk about...

Is there any book to learn how to use it? Where could i buy it?

Do i need to buy photoshop? This is my biggest dissapointment, i just wonder if all of you that take this amazing pictures use photoshop or you do it all from the camera, and if you use photoshop do you buy it? because is incredible expensive!!!

Thanks a lot for taking your time with it...

In reply to Brian: What is RAW format?
 Maria - Spanny 07 Apr 2012
In reply to Frogger: Thank you!
 Brian 07 Apr 2012
In reply to xusa:Raw image files are sometimes called digital negatives, as they fulfill the same role as negatives in film photography: that is, the negative is not directly usable as an image, but has all of the information needed to create an image. Likewise, the process of converting a raw image file into a viewable format is sometimes called developing a raw image, by analogy with the film development process used to convert photographic film into viewable prints. The selection of the final choice of image rendering is part of the process of white balancing and color grading.

Like a photographic negative, a raw digital image may have a wider dynamic range or color gamut than the eventual final image format, and it preserves most of the information of the captured image. The purpose of raw image formats is to save, with minimum loss of information, data obtained from the sensor, and the conditions surrounding the capturing of the image (the metadata).
In reply to Brian: I've been resisting RAW Brian but finally got around to shooting in it today. Having played around in lightroom I don't think I'll be shooting as many jpegs in future!!!

Nice double rainbow!

I've not had much chance to get out and take climbing related pictures recently. The set of 3 pictures below are from a college course i've just finished. I was told that I couldn't do something climbing related because that's pretty much all i've submitted for the course so far.

The aim with this set was to portray how graffiti largely goes unnoticed...

Your idea was good!

Anyway - this is from last Saturday - ended up in Padley Gorge shooting hand-held, in low light with a wide-open aperture at high iso values: totally out of my comfort zone!

"Money, Growing on Trees"
http://www.flickr.com/photos/drupka/7425830264/

I think that set is no where near as good as I thought at the time (strangely, the results looked better on the camera's lcd screen than on my monitor - usually its the other way round!)
I'd be interested to see what other people think of the other three (there may be more to put up - I have a few shots of a particularly gnarly and ruined tree): over-done, over-green, or whatever?

Nice use of an ND grad there Nic... or was that all lucky timing with the light to bring in all 'within range' for the camera?

Anyway - I was out today - got quite a few, but it was more of a reccie for future locations and opportunities so I've only put up 4 out of the 30-odd I kept on the card from my wanderings.

This is rather un-summery, but perhaps the most striking of the colour images:
the discarded flowers of 'Withered Memorials' - http://www.flickr.com/photos/drupka/7435105070/

and this is somewhat more in-keeping with the season we are *meant* to be having:

I don't know what associations that colour palatte is making in my mind but I find it vaguely sinister, in a post-apocalyptic, distopian kind of way. Possibly it reminds me of some movie I've watched, I'm not sure! I like it, it hints at a story somehow.

I was playing around with some longish exposures on water last night too, as part of an ongoing project featuring red balloons. I'm really just using the balloon as a tool to make me think a bit more creatively and have a bigger input into the subject of my photographs, because I know that's my weakest area.

I find them intriguing, on most of the shots I take the thematic is water, it's movement and the subject around it. Not just that but how I see as well and how people with colour blindness perceive the light around them.

Both were taken with an Olympus VR-340, a camera no bigger than a pack of cards which I've recently bought. It performed extremely well; though it sometimes took a wee while to lock on to focus, the light and dark in the two pictures I've linked to, in the rather challenging lighting conditions that prevailed, are extremely good for such a small camera. I'm rather impressed.

Beautiful.
In reply to Fish-rider: Two stunning shots there (although, picture-straightener that I am, I wondered whether the horizon in the murky shot was quite level. But whether it is or not, it's a cracking shot).

I've been a bit restricted of late; the best I've managed is taking pictures of the flowers in the garden. http://www.flickr.com/photos/8411024@N08/7753537178/in/photostream

Thanks for the reply Tony. Yes the horizon is spot on, although I see how it can appear not with way the murk is blending into the sea it is giving sense of it being on the tilt.

In reply to Fish-rider: Haven't taken anything this week. I did drag the camera gear along to Bolton Abbey yesterday but since the seasonal monsoon was visiting I contented myself with throwing things in the river for my sister's dogs to chase; there is nothing as affectionate as a wet dog and my muddy clothes are now in the wash.

I have been back to a couple of difficult images I took in Cornwall earlier this year on days when you could either expose for the sky and sea and have a very dark land, or expose for the land and have a hopelessly over-exposed sky (since I was using the LX3, ND filters weren't an option). Consequently, some photoshop jiggery-pokery has been required to get images that look something like I remember them. I am pleased with the outcome for this one http://www.flickr.com/photos/8411024@N08/7822175920/in/photostream as you can see the green copper stain on the cliffs.

I think it would certainly appeal, any chance of an edit and re-post?

Gear-wise, those were taken with a cooled mono camera (SXV-H9). The 7 sisters was taken at 450mm f5.3 using RGB filters and the other one was at 320mm f3.9 in narrowband at 656nm (both using a Takahashi FSQ-85). The moon and Jupiter used the scope at 450mm but with just a Canon 60D. I think I just balanced on the fence for those.

It would've been great if I had been up there over the last couple of days though - I've seen reports of good touring conditions and some fairly good easy winter climbing conditions in the Cairngorms.

I hope the weather's good enough to allow me to get a shot a the falls near Meeting of the Waters tomorrow - should get there just before dusk all being well.

That's not the finished article by any means - I'm still searching for the best edit - lots of dodge and burn required to give it more 'balance' if that makes any sense? I took about 30 frames as the clouds swirled, briefly cleared and then enveloped where I was standing - this is from the clearest shot I got with the best composition I could muster.

Curiously, it was this time last year that I took what I think was my best shot of 2012 - I wonder if I'll better this one this year?
