Ben Nevis Map, 5 kbDuring periods of good visibility the navigation is relatively straightforward, but as soon as the mist comes down the plateau can be an extremely confusing and frightening place, especially under conditions of snow and ice. Sound map and compass skills along with a little forethought will go a long way towards avoiding the epics which the unprepared often experience, sometimes with disastrous consequences.

In reply to UKH Articles: Done this in a white out and all I can say is than goodness for the cairns. However they dissappear to some extent on the plateau and we nearly ended up bearing left too early, bearing down Gardyloo. Pace counting was essential, however, as the article suggests and I was exhausted from the concentration when we got back down out of the gloop
