If you're on Windows, you could use Windows Movie Maker (which is in the OS)
It's pretty basic, but quite intuitive.
Tip: avoid lots of effects - they're usually intrusive, amateurish and detract from the message you're trying to convey. Instead of the viewer looking forward to the next slide, they start thinking
'God, what's the next crap, unnecessary effect going to be?' Seriously, avoid at all cost.
