[Will Sim using the Black Diamond Avalung in Chamonix, 4 kb]15 minutes is generally accepted as the time you have before running out of oxygen if buried in an avalanche - assuming your airways are free. If you are wearing an Avalung the onset of hypoxemia (insufficient oxygen in the blood) can be delayed by up to 60 minutes.

Will Sim and Jon Griffiths test out Avalung-equipped packs.

"To our relief, as the rest of us made our way down, a blue figure squirmed its way out of the debris. We had been lucky, the avalanche had spat him out short of the gaping crevasse not far below."

In reply to UKC Gear: In that video the guy did have an avalung and put it in his mouth but it was knocked most of the way out during the avalanche which at best stopped it working totally, at worst made it a chocolate teapot.

Two things, firstly thanks for posting a link to the original non-advert vid.
Secondly, for anyone who doesn't want to read through the full discription here's the key sentance regarding Steve456's comment:
"He had a Black Diamond Avalung on, but as you can tell from the video while he's talking as he's dropping in, it wasn't in his mouth to start. He tried to shove it in the instant of starting to get sucked down, but it didn't stay in fully during his ragdoll descent. It was just off to the corner of his mouth he said, and he definitely got some snow / ice in his mouth still."
