We should have a video channel at UKClimbing.com and that may happen this year. At the moment we can embed YouTube video into articles and advertisers can use them in Premier Posts. It would be nice to be able to use a larger format and we are investigating that.

Meanwhile, we have hired the young ...

Yes.

Doesn't work for me. I've no sound at work and no broadband at home. High bandwith multimedia content as the main source of entertainment/information drives me away. BBC news do this too, some stories are covered as video only. Useless!

The animated banners you use now are starting to pi$$ me off. Not everyone has top notch computer kit/access.

In reply to Mick Ryan - UKClimbing.com: I think video is brilliant, but it is also good to have a text alternative of any video content.

Some sites have gone a bit video mad, and if you want to access a review of a new product, you have to sit through 10 minutes of someone talking at a camera and showing you how to use the product. Great if you have broadband and 10 minutes to spend, but I'd also like to skim a text version of the review to extract the important information, and THEN watch the video when I get a chance / if I'm interested enough.

Careful, with your high amount of daily traffic (as the recent news article shows) adding video may result in ISPs demanding that you fund the upgrade of the countries network infrastructure in the UK to keep up with demand a la BBCs iPlayer

I'd much rather see the training section up and running

In reply to jkarran:

You could simply set your browser to "Text-only" then you wouldn't see the annoying banners, nor would they be downloaded, thus reducing your bandwidth usage.

Yes we are aware of that.

As regards other comments, UKC is committed to supplying editorial as text, images and video.
Not just video.

But we want to be able to add more video for those who appreciate it and can access it.

As regards banners. Adverts fund this site. Without advertising no UKClimbing.com, no media in fact.

If you want to see a good example of in your face, obtrusive banner adverts, go here:

We are committed to keeping the balance right, with rich editorial and user content, and helping climbing companies sell gear and services.

Video. That's a great idea Mick.

How about maybe dedicating part of the new video channel to stone nudes such as these?

I've no problem with banner adds while they're reasonable, personally I don't really notice them unless they're broken. Some however (flash or java based ones?) slow my computer down and take bloody ages to load and get going.

My gripe isn't with advertising, I understand it pays your bills, that's fine but when it interferes with me reading a site I just stop going there.

Same here - it's only some ads that cause problems.
 slacky 17 Apr 2008
@jkarran & wingnut : Check your browser settings and simply disable flash/java plugins if its really bothering you.

It would be good for people to have the choice to post videos on their galleries alongside their photos, since it is a lot easier now to take a climbing film (with good capacity & quality on digital cameras). But I wouldn't like it to become the normal throughout UKC within articles etc. I'm one of the people who has a poor internet link - I have broadband at home, but it doesn't cope well with video or big attachments (probably because it is the lowest speed broadband).

I'd love to see the training session up and running next year. There's a small woodie in my house next year and my fingerboard should be in place in Leeds so it would be great to keep track and perhaps start some form of regime.

Install Firefox: http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/ and Adblock plus: http://adblockplus.org/en/

and I would be in favor of a training section, something similar to Neil Gresham': http://www.planetfearextra.com/page.php?pageID=12&categoryID=10

In reply to Mick Ryan - UKClimbing.com:

Yep I'm liking the imbedded video links. There's been good use of it so far, in particular the quiz that you ran a wee while back. The video icon beside the Premier post is fair enough but do you really need to have a big square beside a post just because it has a picture? It doesn't increase my desire to read the thread and just looks clumsy.

In reply to Mick Ryan - UKClimbing.com:

I've got no problems with the banner per sé, but could you politely ask the shops not to let the bloody things flash red-white? That really distracts from the main content, and doesn't do any good to UKC. (there's a BMC banner that is VERY annoying)

I currently have flashblock installed, but UKC is (still) on the list of sites that are always allowed to load flash.

I quite like the vids, but also have no high-speed internet at home, and no time at work to watch vids...

Any truth in the rumour that the video channel will be showing Alan James performing Riverdance ?
