Ueli Steck's solo attempt to climb a new route on Annapurna's (8091m) south face ended May 28, when he survived a 300-meter fall.

The 30 year old from Switzerland, recently soloed the Eiger Nordwand (3970m) in a record time of 3:54 this February, and is known for his lightweight approach and is a long-time critic...

I'm just gobsmacked when I read about solo attempts like this. The path round the back of Pillar Rock scares me, never mind something like that.

In reply to Mick Ryan - UKClimbing.com: I remember reading about Lafaille's attempt on this route. Very committing route. If Steck had climbed it solo, how would that have ranked with regards to other high altitude climbs?
