Over 100 climbers have died on Mount Hood since the 1970's, the latest last December.

Last Sunday three climbers fell 500ft, Global Positioning System gear, beacons and a dog called, Velvet helped in their survival and quick rescue by Portland Mountain Rescue team.

Portland has an MRT??? More of an island than a mountain...

Could similar legislation or recommendations be introduced in the Scottish mountains in winter especially in the light of the recent tragic deaths in the Cairngorms?

I'm guessing most people here would think it comes down to personal responsibility rather than mandatory beacons.

Lots of mountains around Portland.

Weather is very maritime, making the Cascades one of the most trecherous alpine areas in the USA.

The Guardian: Who the HELL Brings A Dog to the Summit of Mount Hood?

In reply to Mick Ryan - UKClimbing.com:
Seriously, this is all over the telly in the states. The rescue team insists that but for that puppy lying across them they might not have survived.
Looked happy as a clam. lol
One member (?) slid 500 feet and is hospitalized with a "non life threatening head injury".
What's that? A scratch?

In reply to Regis Von Goatlips:

Thats funny man Why take your dog to the Summit?

Is it just me?
Am I the only one here that loves them so much that I'd not put them in danger of
rock fall
crevases
hypothermia
etc etc
puppys are a real pain to fit for crampons too.
Or did I simply misread you?
