Two Pakistani army helicopters rescued Tomaž Humar from the Rupal wall in the early morning hours, where he had been trapped for six days. Tomaž is currently at base camp in care of doctor Anda. He is a bit frozen up but other than that he seems to be out of danger.

The rescue mission was outstanding. Tomaž was rescued with a rope on which he hung all the way to touch down at base camp. As Maja told us, doctor Anda examined him immediately after landing. Tomaž’s hands and legs have reddened, however, there seems to be nothing critical. He is able to walk and has decided to remain at base camp for a while. He feels he does not need to be admitted to the hospital in Islamabad.

After being trapped on a small shelf in the wall for six days with nothing more than a rope and an ice screw, Tomaž is exhausted, especially because he had no food in the last few days.

I've just bought the movie rights.

Seriously, good news - notably so, as his plight has been so public - if he'd perished out there it would have felt particularly morbid to have been following it all online.

A very smart move by the Pakistanis. They have reduced the peak fees massivley and now they are offering high Altitide rescues. Will this encourage people to go there rather than Nepal which is having its own problems?

Think of the future now with these high alt choppers, a new breed of soloist may emerge who getts choppered to the base of a route or a col to avoid the slog, races up the route in no time atall then calls for a pluck off from the summit. It happened in the Alps.

I wonder if all the Aspen helishier operators are pondering a move to Pakistan with thier ultra rich clients.

I hope he had good insurance - it must have cost a bundle - esp with the two engineers getting flown out from Europe with the winch.

Golly!

Poor chap...he clearly wants them to give him a bit of space and everyone is crowding round and doing team photos.

Anyway, good that he's safe.
