Managed to grab a very cheap pair of scarpa touring boots online - worth the punt even if I had to re-sell them, but I'm struggling to know if they're too big or not.

I'm a UK9 foot, typically wear 27.5 Salomon alpine boots with my toes rammed pretty far into the shell. I ordered these based upon a "UK9" sizing, but they have arrived with a 28.5 liner.

These, with the liners out, have about 17-19mm behind my heel (measured by putting a felt tip marker in) with a bare foot and big toe against the front.

With the boots on and tight, and my own insoles in, I have a little heel lift and can wiggle my toes even when standing upright (i.e. not locked down and toes forward). The mid-foot feels good, but I would have certainly asked for a smaller size if they were alpine.

Get them fitted or play around with volume reducers?

if your foot is moving around in them when i walk mode then you are going to have issues, so yes they are too big. that said, heat moulding the liners may puff them up enough to make them maneagable, although that will soon compress with use so only a short term solution. different foot beds may also reduce the volume, speak to a specialist ski shop boot fitter.

17-19mm is around two fingers, which is a good shell fit as I recall. Touring gear feels a bit floppier anyway compared to the 'skiing on rails' feel of alpine downhill gear.

Which model are they?

A “Scarpa UK9” would be a mondo 28.0.

Ski boots don’t come in half sizes, they come in full sizes and the liner thickness takes up the space for the “half size”. Liners, however, pad out. Your Salomon boots are a 27.5 shell with a thin liner and would be the same shell as a Salomon 27.0 boot. Scarpa differ from other brands as they change shell size on the half size, not the full size.

So, you have a 29.0 shell size with a 28.5 liner in, i.e. a thicker liner to take up the space, so a UK10 shell with a UK 9.5 liner.

Compared to the Salomon, which are a UK9 shell with a UK9 liner, they’ll feel big. Only you can decide whether they are too big......

My piste boots are Salomon 27.5 and I tour in 27.5 Scarpa, a 28.5 Scarpa would be like a boat on my feet

sadly, if they’re too big now they’ll only get bigger as the liner boot compresses with use.

f1's new for a hundred quid.

Guess I'll sell them on. Cheers for the advice all.

If they're F1's they should have an Intuition liner in them which is a good liner and probably the best stock liner for working with and moulding.

Going on the shell sizing (17-19mm gap) I'd be tempted to have a go at heat moulding the liners and maybe using some high density foam to eliminate heel lift. You can always sell them on afterwards if this doesn't work.
