Hi folks, we're considering Austria as a skiing destination in January after many years of bashing the French pistes. On a the last trip to Austria the choice of ski hire  was limited to super skinny carvers for freshly groomed corduroy or .... 'extremely' super skinny carvers for freshly groomed corduroy. Nothing remotely 'all mountain' or heaven forbid 'free-ride'.

After browsing a number of websites it would appear that Austrians only ski on elongated chopsticks and fat planks are rarer than a cheap beer above 2000m. Sooo anyone have any recommendations for ski hire with a slightly 'broader' range ?  I appreciate that Austria is a big place but I have checked a number of resorts for ski hire and they all seem to have the same issue.

I have tried skiing powder on carvers and it's only fun for those watching !

Any where in particular you're looking for?

I've had wide skis (over 100mm waists) in quite a few resorts, Mayrhofen, Fieberbrunn, Saalbach, Kaprun, Schladming. Based on the amount of freeride ride in St Anton and Ischgl I would imagine they're not too hard to come by there.
