Flying/shipping skis to Alaska

Trying to book flights to Anchorage currently, with skis. It's proving a complete nightmare. Lufthansa, for instance, seem to want €250 *each way* for a pair of skis.

Am I doing something wrong? Is it a recent change? It wasn't this expensive when I last flew skis to Alaska.

Any advice (including alternatives, e.g. shipping them ahead of time) gratefully received...

In reply to alexm198:

I flew to Petersburg AK last year with British Airways and Alaskan Airlines (via Seattle). We had 2 pair of skis in one ski bag with us and it went checked in as normal baggage without any issues. I used an independent travel agent to book the flights as it worked out just as cheap as it would have been to do it all myself. We did tell the travel agent we were taking skis, but they weren't listed differently on the tickets. Not sure if that helps, but good luck.
