I'm heading over to my native north east from Kendal on Friday afternoon and was looking for a run on the way. Was thinking of Wild Boar Fell via Uldale, across the Swarth Fell ridge and down the Pennine Bridleway. I've not done it before so any info appreciated. Is it a bog fest or not too bad underfoot? Pathless on the ridge or not?
Cheers

I walked once, on a rainy day, from somewhere around Aisgill Farm and followed a vague path up through Mallerstang to break in the ridge, up on top, then came down over Swarth Fell to the Moorcock Inn.
Got completely soaked, but my feet were OK.
So, reasonably good underfoot, I'd say. It's a good hill, the cairns are great.

Largely pathless to get to the ridge, but good paths once you're up there. Away from paths there are boggy bits, tussocky bits, and runnable bits.

It's one of my favourite areas for running. Some photos from a Mallerstang/Wild Boar round a few winters ago:

Admittedly not from Ulldale but have a look here, i have done this a few times, really nice running in general, i seem to recall the only boggy bit is the decent off Swarth Fell on the map which is a bit off piste, lots of options for loops depending on how far you want to go.

Thanks for the replies everyone. All sounds good so I hope the weather on Friday afternoon plays ball.

In reply to Simon Caldwell:

Cracking evening for a run last Friday. Very boggy off the ridge and not much of a path to see in Uldale so we traversed up from Whin Stone Gill to between Swarth Fell Pike and Swarth Fell summit. The run along the ridge and down the Pennine Bridleway was a joy.
