Trail runs

I am looking for ideas for running next year. The idea is to do another marathon (see my other thread), but also to find a couple of interest ing trail runs.

Ingredients: with hills but not too steep, 15- 20 miles, not huge numbers running, (hundreds not thousands) doesn't have to be local (Reading) anywhere from the Peak to the South coast ...

Any favourites anyone could recommend? I know this query belongs in a running website but I like climbers. Oh, and I plan to spend the winter running up and down hills in the Chilterns.

Two races that got me hooked on trail running (be careful, you'll be running ultras before you know it) were The Beast down in Corfe Castle.

And the Midsummer Munro at Box Hill near London.

Plenty of varied terrain and they were challenging enough at the time without being too much to handle. Admittedly I lived in London at the time so my options were limited.

Did a few of these last year: https://www.uphilldowndale.com/

Really enjoyed them. Some great running locations around N Wales, not normally open to the public.

It's only 10 miles, but the hype around Eridge 10 is totally justified. So much fun!

Just did the Ennerdale 50k, but they also do a 25k. Lovely spot, great food tent, friendly and low key.

Oops, just realised you said the Peak south, sorry, Ennerdale is in the Lakes....still worth it though...

If we are going to Yorkshire. The Nidderdale 20 (miles) in June last year was good fun, but not very formal in terms of distance or timings.

Wharfedale is a cracker. Used to enjoy the marathon until they stopped it a few years back.

Somebody already mentioned Greensand on the other thread

Some of the above have 10K or half-marathon versions, if you want smaller than marathon. I've only done Beachy Head, but a friend has done all the others. Beachy Head is a blast...even got a guy dressed in a kilt playing the bagpipes to spur you on (or not!).

Thank you, they look brilliant!

Lots to choose from now, it's going to come down to dates.

In reply to BusyLizzie: there’s one round Derwentwater that is part of the Keswick mountain fest (June?) I have t done it but want to. I’ve run down one side of the lake though and of course it is stunning. Nice underfoot too. Pricy but sometimes the expensive ones are worth it.

I waas o holiday there in summer, running by the lake while training for my first marathon in September - a lovely place, and the combination with the mountain festival is very tempting! Thanks.

Nine Edges in the Peak?
OP BusyLizzie 04 Nov 2017
In reply to Thugitty Jugitty:

I really really want to run the Nine Edges, having walked it a few years ago. I think the date may be awkward for me this year but it is high on the wish list (though probably at the limits of what I can cope with atm)
In reply to BusyLizzie:

I managed the Nine Edges starting from a background of running about 10-15 miles a week. I started ramping up the distances in the January, with the race being in September. I adapted one of Hal Higdon' marathon training plans. So it is doable. That said, I did pick up a few overuse niggles. Beautiful route and a friendly race.

In reply to Thugitty Jugitty:

That is really encouraging, as that is about where i am - distance will be fine, it's just those whopping hills!
