Pain in the a**e

After upping the hill work I'm suffering from niggling pain in both buttocks. This as been accompanied by a decrease in speed on the flat as I just can't seem to get any 'kick' as I push off from the back foot.

Glute stretches don't seem to be targeting the affected area, and I'm currently sitting on a squash ball to massage the trigger points, much to Mrs Ridge's amusement.

Anyone had anything similar and got any advice?

In reply to Ridge: try a golf ball instead . It'll make your eyes water .

Important clarification: is it pain at the time, or only afterwards?

If at the time as well, can you 'push through it' ok?

thanks

Hi Ben

Pain at the time, but leaves a tender spot that I gan find by pressing hard afterwards. Not excruciating to the point it would be necessary to stop, but I stop as a precaution to try and stretch to relieve it, (touching my toes and holding for a few seconds seems to allieviate it for a while).

The former is much less problematic than the later. Try to find a sports physio by recommendation where you live.

I was thinking this, I would see a physio as it does sideline people for a while.

I had something on one side which was really helped by this stretch -Advanced Piriformis Stretch (Pigeon Pose) - see https://www.verywellfit.com/stretches-for-tight-hips-piriformis-3120299 although the physio I saw was unconvinced that I had the specific syndrome.

I've had a mild case of high hamstring tendonitis, yeah it's not fun and forces a change in training until resolved.

I got it climbing though, or at least i think it was. Heel hooking, I was climbing up a tree with the kids though(no warm up). Perhaps it's a sign of age and lack of maturity at the same time.

I had a somewhat similar experience on my right side, although I have a history of sciatica. Went to see a physio who specialises in runners. She considered my symptoms and history together with a range of physical tests and concluded that what I was experiencing in my leg and butt was actually due to lower back issues. A combination of physical manipulation, stretches and back exercises has sorted it out.

I would therefore recommend you see a physiotherapist, preferably one that specialises in runners.

Have you spent a lot of your life driving? I hope you haven't got the same non-specific pain in the gluteal region that Mrs RR suffers after years as a regional Sales Manager, pressing on and not stopping at motorway services to rest. An x-ray has revealed a spondylolisthesis of the lower spine but two orthopedic consultants and a neurologist have not blamed that for her permanent pain or been able to diagnose the pain.

No, but I do spend a lot of my day polishing the seat of my trousers on an office chair though.

Thanks for all the informative responses, will book a physio ASAP  - don't like the sound of high hamstring tendonitis - my achilles is bad enough!

Er...maybe I'll start with the easy stuff first, not sure I'm bendy enough for that one!

HHT is something I've been trying to iron out over the last couple of months and it's taking it's time to heal. This is quite informative, although not light reading - www.physio-pedia.com/Proximal_Hamstring_Tendinopathy

Sorry for slow response - been away in the hills (probably the most unusual cause for slow response on ukc!).

That actually sounds reassuring, and makes slow spinal cord or blood vessel related issues extremely unlikely. Which means its "just" a physio issue rather than a doctor one.

Good luck with the rehab!
