Hi all,

have some time off tomorrow and fancy a bit of a hill day, I know the weather is getting milder today and tomorrow, but rain and strong winds are forecast, just wondered what the snow conditions are like for maybe the Edale skyline or similar tomorrow.

has anyone been up there today? Any update on conditions from the ground rather that the forecasts would be appreciated.

thanks all.

Ryan

Thanks for the update, wet and windy I can cope with. 😃, was there still deep snow and ice? Or more slushy and wet now?

Walked round Burbage/Higgar Tor today. Wet. Lots of deep, slushy wet snow hiding boggy puddles. Wore totally inappropriate shoes and was squelching all the way round. Wellies wouldn't be a bad shout.

In reply to midgen:

Think I’d struggle to run in wellies 😀, but waterproof socks will be on! Getting wet and muddy is half the fun!

thanks for the update.

I was further South in the Derbyshire Dales today - v soggy underfoot.  Slush, rather deep slush in places that could still just about be called snow, and lots and lots of standing water.  The only ice I encountered was on the well-trodden paths in shady dale bottoms where the winter sun doesn't reach and the snow has been compacted underfoot.  I think the fastest I travelled at any point was the little downhill section of the Limestone Way that I slid down on my arse like a water slide after losing my footing.

I went up over Alport Castles from Ladybower - very very wet and slushy/muddy, not much snow left. I saw a child riding a dog, looked like the best mode of transport.

Thanks for the update all, just the kind of info I was after.

It was thawing rapidly this morning. With the strong warm winds and a bit of rain I can't imagine there will be much left tomorrow.

Thanks for the info all, looks like it will be a fun day ! 😀

Thawing yes, but still some wet drifts. Road under Stanage Apparent North was still blocked at 5pm. Loads of surface water on the roads.

Someone's pictures from running on the Great Ridge earlier today: https://www.facebook.com/groups/345833125602252/posts/2139135392938674/

On my side of the Peak, it's raining now and 6 degrees. I'm about 400 mtrs lower than highest bits of Kinder, so potentially its coming down as snow on the plateau although the Met Office thinks its the same sort of temperature up on Kinder now https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/forecast/gcqxtjw1s#?date=2023-03-12

The forecast for tomorrow looks really horrible. Be careful.

Hi Ryan, was up around Black Rocks/Whaley Moor/Big Stone/the Shooting Cabin on Saturday.  Epic drifts in places and nothing in others where the snow had been blown away.  Right now in New Mills, it's high winds, heavy rain and noticably milder.  I'd expect that any snow that's left will be slushy/wet so expect some type 2 veering to type 3 fun.  If you head out, have a good one!

That seems to be a closed group, the pics aren't visible to anyone who isn't a member.

I think that was a bit optimistic, but maybe the OP will report back.  (Assuming he survives!)

It's a group anyone can join. I have to say for winter climbing and general winter hill conditions now, Facebook groups and Instagram tags have basically replaced more specialists sites for this one. I totally understand why some people don't want to use Facebook, but even if you don't do anything else on the site, having an account so you can be a member of Ground Conditions (and similar groups) is worth it for winter climbers and hillwalkers.

Sure, if the point of your post was a recommendation to join that group I can see the sense in that.  Particularly as it wouldn't seem obvious as a place to gather beta about the Peak because, y'know, "UK Mountain Areas".

It looked to me like you were just intending to 'share' the pics, and it's a v common mistake for people to post a link to pics that their intended audience can't see, so I was assuming that was probably what you'd done, soz.

I thought that's why it's called the Peaks? (N.B. Joke. etc. #PeaknotPeaks)

More my thinking was that if the OP was a keen hill goer, he might likely already be a member, and if not, could click and join. People do post reports from the Peak, and more rarely other wild-ish places in England, like Dartmoor, but it is mainly the Lakes and North Wales plus Scotland.

it's all thawing but I think the Downfall is still in, if you're thinking of winter climbing

Thanks for all the info guys, in the end I decided to give the High Peak a miss and spent a few hours running  or should I say bog snorkelling round the Chew Valley Skyline, it was a tad wild, but had a great laugh! A day well spent. 😃
