So is it a bloody route, problem, line or bloc?

Rather pedantic post so I apologise in advance for those who dislike this kind of thread, but I am genuinely perplexed at the (mis)use of different terms to define a climb.

Are the above terms (in title) used interchangeably or should they have specific use? What other baffling terms to define a type of climb have I missed?

Route- any climbing traditionally requiring a rope?

Problem- A boulder problem. Could be used to desribe a specific part of a pitch?

Bloc- Used interchangebly with Problem?

Line- Used to describe the actual position of any of the above?

Other terms:

Boulder (pretty self explanatory).

Pitch- Used to describe a specific pitch on a multi-pitch route. Or sometimes just a single pitch?!

Rig- If you are american?

In walls I find you sometimes get:

Line - synonymous with "panel" - a section of the wall with a lower-off at the top for several different routes set on that line/panel.

Route - each individual set of holds on that line/panel.

Well it should be self explanatory (a big lump of rock), but it now seems to be used as often to mean "boulder problem" which is something very different. I personally find this very irritating.

Another thing you seem to get is foreigners mentioning 'lines' when they presumably mean climbs or routes since in many cases the 'line' is non-existent. E.g. on grid bolted limestone!

I'm increasingly seeing/hearing "route" used for boulder problems, which I personally find irritating. But usages and meanings of words change in languages over time no matter much we old farts might wish they didn't.
