As per the title, looking for recommendations of shady spotter climbing in the Briancon area. Preferably vertical and steeper. 7b to 8a sort of range.

Many thanks,

Will

Can't remember the name but there's a narrow (only a few metres wide?) Gorge which is maybe half hour down the valley from Ailefroide, with routes on both sides so you can chase the shade. Sorry for the vagueness but was last there about 10 years ago.

Ceuse is also worth considering, ticks the box perfectly in terms of shady and cooler as high up, but might be further than you want to travel.

Edit: think it's this place https://www.ukclimbing.com/logbook/crags/le_canyon_le_rif_doriol-9131/#over...

There are a bunch of great places in the shade, face bouc in ailefroide has awesome overhanging granite routes.

Tournoux has lots of great routes but is a bit manufactured.

The Rif is a great place to visit for a day, super interesting rock.

Rue des Masques has loads of cool conglomerate climbing.

la Saume is amazing (best of the bunch) but has a mega drive up a very bumpy forest track.

Fessourier is perfect for this.

We liked this crag.

Steep, pumpy, fun, undergraded routes in the shade till 2/3pm

Hi Will, Even the shady venues will struggle with in the heat we are having at the moment its close to 40 most afternoons in L'Argentiere, its not normally this hot for this long here in summer.

The classic summer venues are

Fessourier, Tournoux, grand brois, Entraygues, l'Atelier, rue des masques Simoust, panacelle, Pimi, rif d'oriol and la Saume. there is an old sector on the shady side of freissinierre that has been rebooted but can't remember its name. But in all honesty most of these are probably still a bit too hot, during a lot of the day at the moment.

you may get lucky and have a good wind on somewhere like rocher Maubert?

There are quite a few new high up venues being developed but not yet ready.

I tried a run today but got shut down by the heat, I think like climbing if you want to get much in, you need to have a very early start to get the best of the day.

cheers
