Rescue Practice

Does anyone know of any quiet crags in or around West Yorkshire to practice rescues of an injured climber?

Ideally somewhere you can access from above or below to practice both scenarios, and with an overhang would be even better.

Doesn’t even need to be a trad or sport route, just somewhere where anchors can be built above

Appreciate any help

Pretty much any grit crag. Heptonstall springs to mind, as it’s got plenty of belay stakes for nice easy set up and not far to haul gear from the car. You probably wouldn’t come across many folk wanting to get on Forked Lightning Crack so the overhang there would be ideal.

Heptonstall a good example, widdop would work but gets busy, Albert promenade another option the routes a bit short but probably enough to practice on.

problem is a short walk and quiet don’t tend to go together that well, neater the car park tends to equal busier the crag. Gorple upper you would probably have to yourself all day but it’s a bit more of a hike.

Top tip - use the smallest crag you can, no point in spending time going up and down. also, protect your ropes from abrasion well as you'll no doubt be hanging and faffing on them for ages. Perhaps consider using a location other than a crag with bomber anchors - mezzanine floor in the factory, or under a disused bridge.

If you think like that? do you have any disused railway line with a bridge (or maybe bridge missing leaving a drop?) that's suitable?

Hobson Moor Quarry

What you lose on the drive you'd save on the walk in.

The whole back wall overhangs a bit and the routes don't see much action. Would only inconvenience the folk traversing but you could probably do what you need to without getting in their way.

You could consider using the vertical training facilities at Yorkshire Dales Guides (just north of settle), the YSS at Helwith Bridge or the one run by cave & canyon behind the Ingleton climbing wall.

You don't need anything special to do this. Where do you normally climb? I'd argue for doing it with the kind of belay set-ups you actually use rather than finding the textbook location with the perfect belay. It's ultimately a problem solving exercise, it could be done on a flight of stairs.
