I was idly wondering - is the identity of 'Whipplesnaith', the author of this cult classic (a) an open secret (b) lost in the mists of time (c) well known but I've missed it, or (d) known only to a select few, or perhaps something else?

Yes. I've found it takes some of the sheen off the Night Climbers to know that his other major work was  "Return to Responsibility: A New Concept of the Case for Fascism in the Post-War World".
