I was exploring the norway-sweden border area up in the arctic on google maps, doing a bit of daydreaming and I came accross this monster of a tower:

https://www.google.com/maps/@69.2107697,19.9357605,3a,66.1y,340.25h,124.11t...

https://www.google.com/maps/@69.2111402,19.9363067,4489m/data=!3m1!1e3

Does anyone know anything about it? What a place! It's not that far from a road either. Not that I'm ever going to get up it. The pinnacle on the left looks a bit like a giant version of that route on Craig yr Isfa where you step off the top of the big spike.

Edit: I think I've found it https://www.summitpost.org/otertind/309338

It's called Otertinden, there's quite a lot of info around, for e.g. http://vikingalpinism.blogspot.com/2012/08/new-routing-otertinden.html.

edit: You beat me

Thanks. Something for next year or whenever it's possible.

you can also just hike up it from the other side with a bit of scrambling!

Good to know thanks. looks wild round there I've never been that far north in Norway.

Yeah, I think some friends have skied up it, or almost all the way with some easy-ish winter climbing to summit.

Red Rover, I've ice climbed across the valley from there and it makes an impressive backdrop! It's a lovely part of the world and there is lots to do up there beyond scary massive quasi alpine rock climbs. In summer mountain biking, fishing, whale watching, hiking, scrambling, and not too far to the west high quality rock climbing. In winter the ski touring and ice climbing is superb. It's not even super expensive to fly up to Tromso although renting a car isn't cheap in Norway!

Looks amazing - thanks for that

Sounds great. Norway is hugely under-rated. I've done some alipine stuff in Romsdal and The Jotunheim and round Narvik and Lofoton as well as walking round Rondane and Dovre and I still feel like I've seen less than 1 % of all that's out there. Looks like there's another huge and wilder area in northern Sweden as well.

No problem, can't wait until travelling becomes a good idea again!

The peaks aren't as dramatic in Sweden generally, although they are big, but there is huge amounts of wild space. A mate who now lives up near Kiruna has done some multiday self supported ski treks from Finland through Sweden and Norway. Really impressive and I would imagine some of the wildest places in Europe, especially in full winter.

I've always liked the look of the Sarek national park. I read that you need a week's worth of food to safely do the central mountain. There can't be many mountains in Europe where that's true! Just walking across that park would be great.

I was about to go on a 10 day ski mountaineering trip there a week before lockdown 😪

I skied into Sarek a long time ago - beautiful place but it wasn't a super successful trip because I had skin issues with my skis. I did get up one peak somewhere in the north of the park though. We skied back across the lake after a few days and explored a bit on Stora Sjofallet national park side as well.

Does that mean that you could set up a top rope on it?

 wbo2 13 May 2020
In reply to FactorXXX:Yes but it'll be a lot of rope for your little legs to carry ;.)

Yes but be careful because you'll hit the ground on stretch below pitch 5.

P.S. that image on google maps is only the smaller of the 2 towers.
