Hi,

I'm building a bouldering wall in a spare bedroom. Couple of questions?

  1. Do I need to restrict my paneling to external (brick) walls or can I also use internal walls with appropriate fixings?
  2. What grade of ply do I need to use?
  3. Is it worth buying rock wall paint or will emulsion + sand do the job?

Cheers,

Steve

What walls you can use depends on what they are made from and what frame you are going to build.

You want minimum 12mm ply but 18mm is best.

You don't need to paint the wall with anything frictiony. Presumably it will be overhanging so you won't be smearing on anything. Get some paint to make it pretty or just leave the wood bare.

You cannot rely on the strength of internal walls, but your bouldering wall can be next to or even attached to such a wall providing it is effectively on a self supporting free standing frame.

Hi Steve, just in the process of building mine right now. Getting ply today and been reading quite a bit.

Dont need marine ply, seems hardwood or softwood is fine but hardwood has a nicer finish. Birch even nicer and great colour as I'm not painting.

Ive bolted my to the roof joists through the laths to get all my strength. Madeife much easier.

Cheers mark
