Has anyone heard of a drone-inspection assisted flash ascent? Would it be a better or worse style than abseil inspection pre flash?

It would be far more irritating

It would solve the problem of people on abseil inspection almost inevitably touching the holds.

For alpinism it would be a powerful way of reducing the adventure - sussing out whether this icy runnel continues for long, or whether you can make it over that rock step to the snowfield. Personally I'd mainly use it for nipping back to base camp for more haribo.

That will be a separate thing to droning-on about a flash ascent?

In reply to dinodinosaur:

If it slots the odd wire in on the way back down, is it still legit?

Drone based clipping device to preplace all your QDs

If this became prevalent at lower grades would the drone operator getting there earlier trump someone's right to get on to a route and lead it or would it be de rigeur to wait until aerial operations are complete to the operator's satisfaction?

Droit d'avion?

I can see where you're coming from - there's obviously a line "how far is too far".

Looking at photographs taken by other people who were on the climb?

Sending somebody up the climb to take those photographs?

Sending somebody up to make 3D models of the holds to build a replica?

Using a really powerful stabilised binoculars from a hill across the way (or expensive camera)?

Using photogrammetry to create a 3d model of the route?

Somewhere there is obviously a line or is it just about declaring what you did?

I have 2 drones. One delivers top ropes, the other delivers cheese sandwiches

What about cake ?

I think drones are an untapped resource in climbing, currently almost all use is photography/filming. There must be so many better uses for drones

  •  Jealous climbers could adapt one to squirt cooking oil on the crux holds of someone else's project
  • Flamethrower drones for reducing vegetation, potentially a whole mountainside depending on conditions
  • Big walls (and small walls) could have drones ferry supplies, although due to weight limitations spirits rather than beer might be more practical (haribo, cake, cheese sandwiches as mentioned before also)
  • Swarms of drones could be employed to drive others back from the start of a popular route, although that might result in climbers taking a cricket bat as standard equipment
  • If drones become big enough they could be used for solo climbers to practice with assistance from a tight rope, like being hauled on top rope, this will be called drone-pointing a route
  • If drones become big enough, they could be used to top-rope a solo climber

A new golden age of climbing awaits, solo could become de rigueur, just a person and their enormous human carrying quadcopter, enjoying the quiet solitude of solo climbing

Dammit I need another specialised drone. Thanks

Or specialised cake, suitable for ballistic delivery by pneumatic cannon or trebuchet.

I love the resupply idea!

You need the drone to scout ahead and communicate with your simul climbing gecko-tech belay bot. They would make a good team.

We are getting closer by the day to Iain M Banks' 'gravity harness'

Jet packs are still a little weighty for climbing.

Thanks, but I suspect cake will not survive the resulting G forces. However, the last batch of scones I made (many years ago) were like rocks and WOULD have survived

I have no issues with it personlly. Just make sure there's nobody around to annoy first before take-off. Simple courtesy.

not sure about abseil inspection, but we have used in the lakes to see whether a crag is wet, save us many hours walking in vain. Be great to use it in Scotland...

Perfect, would save a lot of effort

A drone made of cake has huge potential.

Not all my cakes rise though, so great scope for failure.
