Any websites give me 1:50k or better of the Dachstein area?

In reply to Deadeye:

There's a few depending on what functionality you want. Kompass.de or mapy.cz will probably cover most bases.

P.s. through the apemap app you can also access some paid for maps from kompass for free

austrianmap.at it's the online national cartographic service.

You may also have a look at bergfex.at. Select a nearby skiing area, then 'Karte'. Select OEK, and you will have the official 1:50 K map.

Oh, and the hardcopy AV-Karte 1:25 K is probably your best bet for mountaineering. https://www.amazon.de/Dachstein-Topographische-Wegmarkierungen-Skirouten-Al...

Thanks all - some days I just have to pause in amazement about the internet.

You can get OEAV official maps (AV-karte) online and offline via https://www.outdooractive.com - their free map is OSM/OTM, but they have a paid subscription (with 1 month free trial) for 30/60€ a year, and the Pro+ for 60€ gets you online and offline access to all the maps - Kompass Premium maps, France IGN, Swiss topo maps and official Alpine club maps (OEAV, DAV). I'd just get a 1 month trial, but remember to cancel the subscription at the end, or they will charge your CC

Few thoughts on the already mentioned ones:

Mapy.cz is nice for the trails, planning and links to mountain huts, but their terrain is basically just openstreetmaps or opentopomaps outside their home country, which can be somewhat lacking in the mountains.

Kompass.de has both free version and premium version, I think about 5€ a month. The paid one adds more detail - mountain huts, via ferratas, trail numbers and some alpine trail difficulty (especially the via ferratas can be deceiving, since on the free version they show up the same as normal alpine trails). But it's still usable.

Bergfex.at has an English version as well - www.bergfex.com and the map is nice.

If i can add a few links for people stumbling here...

Free to use in the apemap app. Apemap is also the only place i could find free to use topo maps for Italy. I think there may be a limit to how many maps you can access free, but i still have not managed to hit the limit after pretty extensive use. Mind you, each map is huge, so chances are i only used a couple of them.

> France IGN,

Free at source (https://www.geoportail.gouv.fr/carte) with very good available tools

> Swiss topo maps

Free at source with again great tools https://map.geo.admin.ch/

In reply to Mr Lopez:

Yes, the best free way on the web is often through the source, like the SwissTopo or IGN.

Although for bigger offline use in an app, you need either subscription (IGN, SwissTopo, OEAV via Outdooractive) or in-app purchase (ApeMap, Viewranger and perhaps Locus, their store is not easily accessible without registering though). The Outdooractive app just offers a month trial version of the "pro+" plan and includes OEAV maps even offline (IIRC), which might be enough for the OP for the trip and without any spending, if he does remember to cancel it afterwards
