Best quarries for climbing outside of the U.K anyone? Do any other nations or cultures share the same or similar relationship with Brits and climbing in quarries? Thanks in advance. Emilio.

I've climbed on quarried rock in Finland and Sweden, although often it's been blasted for making room for buildings, roads etc. rather than to extract the rock to use elsewhere - so perhaps not technically a quarry?

I can't imagine other countries don't have similar, at least not unless they have endless natural crags to climb on.

I've climbed quarried rock abroad a few times but generally just when the weather was crap in the mountains and unsurprisingly never been that impressed.

This was ok for a quick hit on a damp day:  Haldenstien#overview

Quite enjoyed Haldenstein when it was too cold in the mountains, interesting black limestone. Our book, the online topo, topo below the climbs and what was written on the climbs itself never quite matched up at times.

In reply to AlanLittle:

That was the one I was thinking of, couldn't remember the name.

La Trinité is quite good despite being right under the motorway,

I've climbed in at least two quarries in France, one near Nancy (Saint Mihiel) was OK, the other a little north of Paris (Saint Maxim ? not sure of the name) was horrid.

Hey Emilio:

We've found an awesome place here in France but you'll need to PM me for details because I'm not publicising it.

It's a massive complex of hard limestone box quarries.

Imagine Pex Hill x 10 and 5 metres higher and bolted.

Great fun.

There are a number of sandstone quarries in Alsace, including  Kronthal. Never been, but there appear to be some impressive walls and features, reminiscent of Nesscliffe (but with good bolts!).

Browse through these: http://www.escalade-alsace.com/bddpv/bddpv_photos.php?rid=1&sid=1&p...

Had to link to this one: http://www.escalade-alsace.com/bddpv/bddpv_photos.php?pid=3426

And of course there's the Roman quarries close to Malaucene, Carriere de Maupas. Unfortunately the walls and corners are 7c / 8a and the aretes 8b. The warm up is 7a.

Nice video here:

Löbejün near Halle, in the climbing desert that is NE Germany. There's also good DWS in the adjacent quarry.

As an oasis, it looks a pretty good one.

Les gaillands in Chamonix is at least partially quarried, and pretty good as far as valley craggng goes
