Afternoon all, any suggestions for the best mantels around? Preferably boulders but any grade and even better if there’s no alternative beta.

Just to get some obvious ones out the way; Mantel Madness (f6C)Mantel Masterclass (f6C)Pulp Friction (f7C+)

Many thanks, Emilio.

The Beast (7B), most of the stuff on Mother's Pet Rock. And a weird dark horse suggestion and the only mantel I know of on maglime; The Big Dig (7A) at Earth Quarry

I'm too fat and dozy these days...  but if you want a pure power and balance move as a sort of mantle-muscle-up, don't overlook bus shelters! from the back as a warm up, but pure overhang as the main prize

They could be the mantle equivalent of beast maker/campus board?

I think Dan Varian described Cow Close Crag as the best hard mantel venue in the country or words to that effect.

I remember there was a very good mantelshelf crux just below the very top of Inspiration at Bowles:

See L/H picture.

This is obviously very Peak-centric, but hopefully provides some inspiration/comedy. Was a hilarious article to be involved in: https://www.ukclimbing.com/articles/features/ned_feehallys_top_mantelshelve...

Gruesome Mantel at Burbage is interesting.  https://www.ukclimbing.com/logbook/crags/burbage_north-88/gruesome_mantel-7...

And loads of stuff at Brimham.

You could consider adding The Mantleshelf 7A at Bowden Doors

https://www.ukclimbing.com/logbook/crags/bowden_doors-824/the_mantleshelf-1...

and maybe The Boss 7B at Shaftoe

https://www.ukclimbing.com/logbook/crags/shaftoe_crags-856/the_boss-114065

to your list?

Menai Vice on the Looning the tube area near Llanberis, I remember having a desperate mantel on it.

On dartmoor:

Death Jug Mantel (f5+) . It's far harder than 5+ though

Skin Graft (f5+)

Mantel Asylum (f6A)

Also stretch and Mantel at the roaches, though the stretch is harder than the mantle

In reply to Emilio Bachini:

Skin Graft (f5+) (may feel harder than the grade it gets!)

Time for Tea (E3 5c) has an exciting one.

Edit- beaten to Skin Graft!

That Mantle at bowden is a bit of an imposter, in no way difficult and certainly not quality.

Stormbringer (E3 6a) is quite tasty and I liked the one on Johnny Fartpants (6c+) as well.  Oops!  Got that wrong - I meant The Flying School (6c)

I've got some great footage of Dan at Hells Mantle - he's actually trying hard! 😂

I personally know two people that have fallen through bus shelters (their own daft fault but still). One nearly severed his arm in the process. Not a recommendation from me.

Bloomin Eck!! All the ones round me are metal. Were they injured on some sort of (not very) tempered glass ones?

The infamous Fireplace Mantel in the Barn on Lundy Island. The photo illustrates a stylistically purist attempt: barefoot, chalk-less and after strong drink has been taken. Obviously, the wheel isn't in.

I'm surprised this one hasn't been mentioned yet:

A Little Peculiar (E6 7b)

"The direct over the imposing roof features the hardest mantelshelf in the world - a free hanging one-armed flip, with no footholds! Good holds lead to the lip but above there is precious little with which to make progress. If you manage the desperate gymnastics, casually saunter up Elegy to finish."

 NorthernGrit 07 Sep 2022
In reply to CantClimbTom:

I wasn't witness to either event but yes glass roofs in both cases.
