Bear with me. Mick's Vector Generation article got me thinking about the names given to associations of friends and climbing partners over the years. I've heard loads of these names but the "membership" doesn't stick in the mind so easily. Unfortunately my friends and I have only ever been dubbed "those punters". What well-known "teams" have there been and who was in them? Off the top of my head:

The Rock and Ice (a club rather than a nickname really)

The Alpha Club

The Burnley Lads

The Black Pudding Team

The Steam Team (Scottish, but who were they?)

The Well-Oiled Machine (was that Berzins and Sowden?)

The High Moors Society (Franco, Warbs, Marks and...?)

Altrincham All Stars (now the Tuesday Nighters)

In reply to Will Hunt:

'Dawson's 94th' a band of bogtrotters led by 'Colonel' Cecil Dawson in the early 1900's who first completed the Colne to Buxton walk. He also held the record for an early version of The Bob Graham Round in 1916. This is from High Peak by Eric Byne & Geoffrey Sutton - well worth a read if you can get a copy.

When I was a caver in Manchester (MUSS) we used to refer fondly to our Lancaster rivals (LUSS) as 'W*nkfaster'.

The Vulgarians from the Gunks, and their short lived magazine the Vulgarian Digest. Worth a Google.

Wasn't Graham Desroy 'well oiled' as well? Also, Tony Burnell, Rick (not Andy).

When I was at Uni in Norwich I was a member of the Cromer Ridge Mountain Rescue Team. Climber and Rambler published our appeal for new members but we got no replies so it just faded away..

Pretty sure the Steam Team included Norrie Muir, formerly of this parish.

What? No mountain rescue in Norwich? I'm not surprised no-one goes there to climb!

What have you done on concrete?

I was a member of a group from Leicester who called themselves the FRCPA

Fellows of the Royal College of Piss Artists. (Climb hard. Drink hard)

Brilliant!!!

In reply to keith-ratcliffe:

After a chuckle I thought: 'Actually, I have crimped a fair amount of concrete over the years (but definitely not in Norwich)'. The old Inglesport wall (80's), the Sands at Carlisle and West View in Preston were all part concrete. My first wall at Horwich was all brick with some concrete jutting ledges if I remember correctly. Am I a concrete crusher?

Finedon Slabs gets a mention in my old Leicestershire Climbs guide of 1993. Although it's in the high peaks of Northamptonshire.

I think you have to be really desperate though.

In reply to Lankyman:

Glad you took in good spirit. I recall that Stone Monkey had some footage of Johnny Dawes on Sheffield structures and incidentally I think I am right in saying that after his climbing exploits JD went to University of East Anglia to do a Masters in Overseas Development. Perhaps he hit the Norcrete then.
