The Climbing Lab Ethos

Our aim is to inspire a lifelong love of climbing by offering a warm and welcoming atmosphere to all climbers, whether starting out or already crushing.  As an established independent wall embedded within the community, we strive to offer excellent facilities, whilst continually developing to offer the best service for our ever-growing customer base.

We currently have an exciting opportunity for an experienced climber and route setter as Setting Manager/Head Coach.  For the right candidate, this would be a full-time post, however the position could be split into two part time roles.

Head Coach

A key element of our centre is offering quality coaching from individual improvement courses to the delivery of the NIBAS programme.  We are looking for a head coach that shares our enthusiasm for climbing and can lead our team of instructors in growing and developing our coaching offering.

  • Working closely with the Operations Manager, the Head Coach is responsible for all aspects of coaching from planning to delivery, as well as heading up a team of instructors.  Key duties include but not limited to:-
  • Planning of creative and engaging coaching programmes, aimed at a variety of abilities and ages, to be delivered by yourself and a team of instructors.
  • Monitoring and evaluation of instructor performance, and to facilitate staff training to ensure the highest industry standards.
  • Manage the scheduling and administration of coaching offerings throughout the year, including the delivery of the NIBAS programme.
  • Development and coaching of performance coaching sessions including The Climbing Lab Youth Academy.
  • Communicate effectively with customers/be the face of The Lab coaching.    
  • On-going evaluation and improvement of all current coaching programmes, including the development of new ideas.  
  • Promotion and marketing of The Climbing Lab coaching offerings.                                                 

Head Coach Person specification

  • Enthusiastic, dedicated, and punctual.
  • Excellent sense of initiative.
  • Experienced climber that strives for personal improvement.
  • Relevant coaching experience, ideally for all ages, abilities and attention levels!
  • Good knowledge of climbing coaching principles, especially for youths.
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety issues relating to a busy climbing centre.
  • Knowledge of promoting/marketing sports activities via social media etc.
  • Ability to manage a team, identify and provide necessary training.
  • Relevant coaching qualification.

Setting Manager

We all know and understand how critical quality and consistent setting is to a climbing centre.  We are looking for a dedicated Setting Manager to continually create fresh and exciting routes and play a role in the future development of the centre.

  • Set consistently entertaining, varied and fun boulder problems around the centre on a weekly basis, in a timely fashion.
  • Manage and develop an in-house team, providing training and mentorship where necessary.
  • Monitor customer feedback and provide a friendly face for customers to approach.
  • Plan and manage the setting calendar throughout the year.
  • Plan, promote and deliver fun and accessible events spread through the year. 
  • Place hold orders and book guest setters according to a budget. Keep up to date with hold and volume development and ensure The Climbing Lab is always a bright, fresh and exciting place to climb.
  • Monitor the setting of the centre to ensure consistency of quality and grade.
  • Monitor and maintain all setting equipment.
  • Attend regular management meetings to report on issues and developments.
  • Keep up-to-date with changes within the setting industry and change practises accordingly.

Setting Manager Person Specification

  • Enthusiastic, dedicated, and punctual, with excellent sense of initiative.
  • Experienced climber with the ability to test hard boulders efficiently on a weekly basis.
  • Experienced setter including setting for youths as well as running and setting for competitions.
  • Excellent knowledge of Health and Safety issues relating to a busy climbing centre.
  • Knowledge of promoting/marketing sports activities via social media etc.
  • Ability to manage a team, identify and provide necessary training.
  • Detailed understanding of the indoor climbing and setting industry.
  • Flexible and creative approach to work.

 In return we offer a package of:

  • Salary £19,000 - £24,000 (full time) dependent on experience.
