A Crawl Down The Ogre EXTRA with Paul Braithwaite, Doug Scott and Clive Rowland

Some mountains are high; some mountains are hard. Few are both. Rising over 7,000 metres in the centre of the Karakoram, the Ogre – Baintha Brakk – is notorious in mountaineering circles as one of the most difficult mountains to climb. First summited in 1977 by Doug Scott and Chris Bonington, on an expedition that also included Clive Rowland, Mo Anthoine, Paul ‘Tut’ Braithwaite and Nick Estcourt, it waited almost twenty-four years for a second ascent, and a further eleven years for a third.
On an afternoon in July 1977, Doug and Chris began their long descent from the summit. In the minutes that followed, any feeling of success from their achievement would be overwhelmed by the start of a desperate fight for survival over the next eight days. And things would only get worse.
Doug suffered two broken legs and Chris smashed his ribs and developed pneumonia. Surviving the week-long descent was only made possible by the heroic and selfless rôles played by Mo Anthoine and Clive Rowland (Tut, suffering from a badly damaged thigh and Nick from a painful throat infection and an emaciated body, had already gone ahead). When the desperate climbers finally made it back to Base Camp, they were to find it abandoned and a note from Nick, who clearly thought something terrible had happened and had decided to catch up with Tut and raise a search party to find them….
The Ogre is undoubtedly one of the greatest adventure stories of all time told by three members of the team.
The evening will include a sale of Nepalese goods, greetings cards and an auction of signed framed mountaineering prints, all supporting the post-earthquake reconstruction work of Community Action Nepal, winner of the 2018 UIAA Mountain Protection Award. CAN is a UK-based registered charity founded by Doug in 1995, which aims to support the mountain people of Nepal (canepal.org.uk)
Doug will also be signing copies of his posters and books: award-winning autobiography Up And About and his latest book, The Ogre – Biography of a mountain and the dramatic story of the first ascent.
