If your rates of pay truly are competitive maybe you should advertise them before asking people to write out a custom cover letter and send you their life story.

In reply to purplemonkeyelephant:

I hate it when a salary isn't disclosed. It makes applying for a job like bidding for a container on storage hunters. I don't apply for jobs that don't advertise the amount now, and I often think that competitive = minimum we can get away with.

In reply to Red Rover:

It's just a power trip from the company. They forget that people work for money, it's the primary reason they are applying, not for the prestige and legacy of being a Duty Manager at Redpoint. All hiding the salary tells me is that you have something to hide.

In reply to purplemonkeyelephant:

Agreed. It does my head in that you are supposed to do a job because of passion and the company's purpose, rather than paying the bills. Meanwhile, on planet Earth... I also understand that companies don't disclose salary so people who already work there won't be annoyed at how much a new starter gets etc, but they could at least give a range so we know if it's worth spending a weekend writing a cover letter and jumping through whatever other hoops there are. And the British culture of never talking about salary could be why our wages are so low!

Almost as bad as no salary is when the salary range is huge!

In reply to Pullhard:

That doesn't bother me as it gives you a target to go for.

I think that's around £21k p.a. before tax etc.
