Assistant Manager Opportunity

The Prow Climbing Centre

The Prow is a new large climbing centre based in the heart of Cornwall. Our team have visited, built, and worked in climbing facilities and centres all over the world, we have distilled our favourite parts from each to create The Prow. We are also including some of our own kooky ideas into the mix to further the industry.

The Assistant Manager Role

We are looking for a passionate person to take on this proactive role. You will be expected to have input in to business decisions and help the centre nurture the team and values. This is a rare opportunity that will be suited to the right candidate, the role will develop as the business flourishes. Ultimately the assistant manager will be supporting the Management team, the centres daily operations, training, coaching.

Management level Responsibilities: 

The assistant manager will be responsible for the supporting communication from senior level to team level.

You will be expected to ensure excellent customer service delivery throughout the centre daily. Respond promptly to customer feedback, ensuring the business and the team makes changes to reflect customer needs. This includes training, monitoring and reviewing staff and procedures in regard to customer service. 

You will work with the centre manager to ensure team follow health and safety on a day to day basis. You will be expected to manage, update and continually review our procedures, to keep these relevant and comply with industry H&S standards. You will be responsible for monitoring and improving the centre’s maintenance issues.

The assistant manager will work closely with the centre manager to implement staff training and ensuring the team are motivated to carry out their role to the best of their abilities. Assisting in all required recruitment, training and integration of new team members following centre values. The assistant manager will work alongside the centre manager to record and monitor staff progress, developing staff performance standards.

Additional responsibilities:

Sales

Lead by example to train and motivate the team, driving sales whilst maintaining our values.

Ensure products are advertised to the highest possible standards in collaboration with the bookings and marketing coordinators. 

Contribute to the website & social media content through blogs/posts in line with our brand identity.

Business development

Participate in strategic and business planning processes with the Board of Directors and Management Team when required. Formulate business strategy for the development of the centre functions and the team.

Work with the management team on creating and implementing sustainability targets and helping the company to achieve its sustainability goals. 

Essential skills 

Experience of staff development to drive sales

Proactive problem-solving attitude

Competent computer skills 

Group coaching experience with juniors and adults 

Friendly approachable manner 

Personal climbing experience (we are an equal rights employer, there is no need to disclose your climbing grade)

Desirable Skills

Experience with front-end Point of Sales systems (RGP ideally)

A dynamic individual with a ‘can do’ positive attitude and approach 

Willingness to work unsociable hours including weekends

Experience with time management and work load management

Desire to improve and advance, personally and within the company.

Essential Qualifications 

CWI or RCI qualification

A current child safeguarding certificate

First Aid qualification

Desired Qualifications 

Performance coaching experience/qualifications

Route setting experience/training

Foundation coach training 

Development coach training

PPE inspection training

Marketing experience 

Event management experience

Catering/hospitality experience  

Hours, pay and perks 

40 hours per week contract flexible to suit your needs.

Starting salary negotiable.

Shifts will include daytime, evenings, weekends and Bank Holidays and good surf days. 

Weekends will be on a 1 on 1 off rotation. 

Continuous support towards training and courses

Up to 28 days holiday per year 

Free / unlimited climbing, hot drinks and fitness classes.

In your cover letter you must tell us about yourself and what you can bring to The Prow. You must tell us about the experiences you have had managing people and facilities.

We would like you to include details about how you have helped improve any procedure at your place of work and what was the outcome. 

In your covering letter we want to get to know you personally, include your favourite meal you have ever eaten and why. An example could be: 14 mini-pasties after finishing an obstacle race, the real reason I like to run endurance races, so I can eat all the pasties. A huge part why I moved to Cornwall the true home of the pasty. – Sam Rearden, Director.

Important dates

CV’s and cover letters must be submitted by midnight 6th September.

You must be available for a 30-minute casual pre-interview chat on Wednesday 11th September (In person or via video call if your current base not local to Cornwall) 

You must be available for interview (in person) on Wednesday 18th September this will last around 1.5 hours.
