Any tips or advice on how to take images and more importantly how to edit the shots and not use Adobe software would be most appreciated.

Hugin is free and good.

Downside is that the gui is awful and the whole package is not very intuitive.

A levelling base plate, a game changer for good panos, I’m a Lightroom adobe guy so I stitch it all in there.

Have a look for Microsoft ICE. It is no longer available from Microsoft but can be found elsewhere on the Web.

It is very easy to use and works well.

These days I just upload the photos to Google photos and wait for them to announce that they have created a panorama.

I have just bought one of these in preparation of experimenting with my 12mm lens and the camera in Portrait position.
