Are there any advantages to using a dedicated remote controller for GoPro rather than the smartphone app. With the app I can see on my phone what the camera is seeing. Is there any way of doing this on a remote controller?

No with a remote.

But the remote is small, might have longer range and less fiddly to use (as in can easily be operated with gloves).

The remote controller doesn't have a screen, so I don't see how you could ever expect it to. I saw a YT video of a guy testing the range of the ap on his mobile to operate the camera. From memory it operated correctly to about 150m, which I thought was quite impressive.

That was my point.

Battery life of the camera is a little better when using a dedicated remote

Eh? That's like me asking 'how do I watch tv on my record player?'

I think I read somewhere that the camera does not get as hot when being used with a remote.
