Which is the best option for tripods used in climbing and mountain photography? Landscape including stitched panoramas, heavy long lenses for climbers on routes, light and portable (for use with a light CF tripod) etc

Ball for landscape. It's so much easier to adjust.

Pan tilt for video.

I have pan and tilt on my manfrotto and often find I'm wishing I had a ball . - Mostly landscapes and long exposure star photography.

Ball, with an L plate on camera.

A panning clamp is also very useful. This is the gold standard, sure there will be other options. http://www.reallyrightstuff.com/PC-PRO-Round-screw-knob-panning-clamp

Ball with L plate, make sure your L plate allows you to use your remote shutter cable if you have one

Prodded, as it were by, this thread I've just bought a new / unused Manfrotto XPRO-BHQ2 ball head - has a pan feature built in.
In reply to kevin stephens:

With my Hasselblad for landscape/mt photography I always used a ball head - weight was a real issue with quite a heavy tripod. All Manfrotto and excellent.

To add to the consensus, ball, i had a pan and tilt on a Manfrotto, its was crap, i took to the shed and butchered it (it wasn't interchangeable) to add a cheap ebay ball to it and its great now.

Yikes! I just put one of these on mine, its got a really smooth pan, and a little bit cheaper, but i am very much punter grade.....

thanks everybody

Really interesting results here, I can't stand ball heads. Impossible to make fine adjustments. I use an Arca Swiss geared head - super compact 4-way pan and tilt. Guess it's just down to personality.
