Was it Saturday that was "alien"? If so, I got it in one as well, and for a similar reason. My first ever 1 - and probably my only ever 1.
I play "easy" and have three pairs of starting words, each pair covering the ten letters that score "1" in Scrabble. They are "train" with "louse", "route" with "snail" and "alien" with "torus". So the chance of choosing "alien" as my first word when it was actually the answer was only 1/6 x 1/x (where x is the number of allowable words, and assumes they are chosen at random - which I also doubt). But there are 6 ways I can be right on the first go, so my chance of being right on the first go is 1/x, which is the same as for everyone else, not surprisingly.
PS: I don't always choose my paired word as the second word if I've got enough clues from my first. I managed to score a two today starting with one of of my normal starters. That seems pretty good just taking those two days in isolation, but my current average is around 3.8 - pretty average I suspect.

I play "hard" mode and my average after 200+ goes is 3.97. It did get to just below 3.8 in early June but has been creeping relentlessly upwards ever since. I try all sorts of starting words just for fun so maybe that contributes.
I am amused that my average on the French version is better - 3.86 after 44 goes.

My regular pair were alien and shout. I was so gobsmacked when alien went green I let out a shout.
Might pinch your route - that's quite a good word.
For the final guess I sometimes try and "think American" as there are def some words more popular stateside

Took my longest time ever, after lines two and three I could think of no words, so had to use letters already known to be wrong. Quite pleased in the end
