I have been playing Wordle for a few months now and for the first time today I thought I would try another game owned by the NYT. I accessed 'Spelling Bee' from the 4 horizontal line icon on the Wordle page. I was really enjoying it. Then after I had got well into it, hooked as you might say, a notice came up saying if I wanted to play any more I would have to subscribe! All the other NYT games are the same.
I wonder if this is a harbinger of things to come?

First time ever failure today. I knew as the second line came up. I counted 7 options with only one missing letter. Needless to say I guessed wrong every time. Very annoying, but I've been expecting this for a while now.

Yes, 4 today. One of those 50/50 choices.
I vary between hard mode and calculated mode. I prefer the latter because there's less luck involved. Today I did hard mode. But I can almost guarantee a four with raise clout & nymph. But I always aim for three, else where's the fun?
It is starting to pall a little for me. A pleasant diversion before lights out and sleep. I can't get my average below 3.8 without wasting too much life, and even the good computer solvers struggle to hit 3.5. So, I suppose I feel that I have its number. I'll still play it though!

Yes I did but I have no recollection of any of the words ☹️, can't even remember any of the Quordle words from today and that was only an hour or so ago. I only (now) remember today's Worldle because the Mrs is struggling to think of any word that fits and I went back and looked.
I think yesterday was where I had a 3789, lots of pressure on the last 3 words (I'm obviously better at remembering numbers).
Surely the core of any word that has a prefix (such as dis-) must exist even if it is no longer in common usage. Counter examples welcome.

My second ever failure too, after foyer recently. These words with loads of possibilities really highlight the randomness element of playing on hard mode so I might switch it back for future games. I enjoy the challenge of it but not the frustration of it basically coming down to luck on a day like today - especially with a word with little recognition outside of the US.

Par 4 for me. A relief after yesterday. That was the worst of those where you have multiple options and nothing to do but guess. The worst was that each wrong guess seemed only to reduce the options by one. I had at least three left when I failed.
I have tried to think of a stategy for early rows that reduces exposure to this but haven't found a sound one. Even with endings there are OUND, IGHT and OUGH to name but three that will likely ruin your day, never mind ones like yesterday where the common letters are split.
I hate it when I fail, but I like this game.

Tricky today I thought. My fourth six (with just one complete failure).
Are they deliberately choosing tricky words, or are they drawing them at random from the list?
I'm still doing Worldle and Nerdle as well, but I'm tiring of those faster than Wordle.

Me also in 2, but it was merely lucky that I went for that rather than another similar word.
When I looked at it again later (whilst the Mrs was doing it in 3 😁) I found another 5 or 6 possibilities that weren't eliminated by my first word so I was luckier than I thought - or maybe the skill was not trying to think of all the possibilities at that stage.

My getting it in 3 was basically because I hadn't found any other words that fitted, and I thought - well this will deal with another 2 letters (and give me more position info on the letters I know) to reduce the possibilities - and hey presto!

I was trying to come up with a word that used the one vowel I hadn't tried yet and ended in the correct letter. That was the first one that I came up with. Sometimes you just get lucky.

I presume you have an app (or the list of Wordle words) to be able to tell how many solutions are remaining.
Do you check whilst you're doing Wordle, or do you check retrospectively to see how many of the possible solutions you had thought of?
Checking whilst doing the puzzle gives you an advantage.

I never use an app to search words or solutions. That seems a bit pointless.
I just guess obvious words and when I can't fathom it out I put something that fits even if it seems weird.
For example I've now discovered that BIGGY and MADGE are both acceptable Wordles!
It's just a bit of fun.

I have better things to do than to join in the NYT's (not unreasonable) monetising of their big Wordle investment and to play with some bot. I like my guesses and that's enough for me.

Ah! I missed that. On a later page it disagrees with itself and says 3.4 steps. Even I can average less than 4 (just!), so I think 4.4 would be unlikely for a bot, if it is at all drenched in data and versed in what to do with it.

3.4 is the bots overall average and it got 5 today (you can see its guesses on penultimate page)
the previous pages are bots best choices knowing the solution- i think..

I definitely don't want to be doing Tetris - brilliant though it is - when it was around initially I used to play for the whole lunch hour and sometimes for a bit after work before going home.
I decided to stop when I found I was still seeing the shapes AS I was driving home.

I check my workings with this bot. Sometimes I beat it, but 3.5 seems accurate given the parameters of the game.
I observed some months ago that the game for competitive humans is all between 3.7 and 4.0.
Still, it's a fun way to spend five or ten minutes.

After my normal first word gave me 2 greens and a yellow, it was the only word I could find.

I am on 3.92 after 126 goes, with 47 each of those being either a 3 or a 4. It is hard to get under 3.9.
