Just drying them out. I’ve read ‘don’t fry them coz they exploded’ but anyone used them much?
Ate a few raw - quite like the squid like texture. I’ve found tonnes of them, all growing on dead elder just like the books say.

Does removing that many stop them from reproducing?

Just asking, I don't know.

Doubt it, or at least not in a meaningful way. I leave all the small ones.

No, the ear is a fruiting body only, as per all other eating fungi. So it's analogous to picking an apple off a tree. Mores to the point these fungi are incredibly common, most elderly elders  carry their share. They also grow less frequently on other trees.

Eating wise, the best bet is to use in Chinese recipes which call for Wood Ears, the Chinese variety being essentially identical to the UK one. They are particularly good in spring rolls I think.
