Hi all, I think the WiFi card has gone on my laptop. it connects directly with cable to the modem but doesn’t find a network when unplugged. Worked for years (with WiFi) no problem but has just now crapped out.

Are those external usb WiFi dongles the way to go? They seem to be priced between £3 and £30 - is it a case of you get what you pay for?

Any tech tips greatly appreciated.

Many thanks : )

I use them regularly and have no problems. I use one for a laptop with a duff Wi-Fi card and a couple of others for Raspberry Pi micro PCs.

I've heard people complain about them. I think if you grab one from ebay or an Amazon reseller then you then you can't be 100% sure they've not come from a batch of factory rejects.

If you go on ebay have a look at the seller and make sure they deal with  computers and aren't one of these ebay sellers that resell crap they got from a container
