Hello Comrades

Hopefully, the hive mind of UKC can help me with this one.

Do you know where I can buy a Manual dyneema rope hand winch in the UK?

A bit like this one.  https://ebay.us/Tqn5OZ

Long story,  but its for an old person to pull a Mirror dinghy up a slipway,  needs to be 10M or more so I cant get a strap winch long enough.  There is no electricity so I cant use an Electric winch.  I would like to avoid a Steel cable for safety and simplicity, with low skill accident-prone users!

What am I missing here? why can I only find them in Australia!!

Thanks

Google 10 strap winch to get product on both eBay UK and Amazon UK.

Not dyneema but polyester or nylon strap will be more wear resistant.

Look up amsteel rope and retro fit it to a suitable handwinch. It's basically synthetic cable and is increasing on popularity with off roaders.

Have a look at Indespension  - http://www.indespension.co.uk/157-trailer-winches

I'm sure they could give advice about the particular requirements.

I understand your dilemma.  Most winches that crop up are designed to fit onto a trailer - they are trailer winches (I have an Indespension trailer and it has a post welded onto the trailer near the jockey wheel for this purpose).  In your example, the winch would have to be anchored to something solid at the top of the slip way.  Is the Mirror on a towable boat trailer or a launching trailer?

depends on the strap/rope used - Dyneema/Spectra itself is more abrasion resistant than nylon or polyester size for size, however because it's so strong invariably a thinner strap/rope is used to give the same breaking strain which is made of less material and thus less abrasion resistant.

Try Harken winches. Really good, little pricey as they’re rated for man-riding and other industrial applications.

Dyneema wear resistance - you are right. I see dyneema and think (incorrectly) carbon fibre.

Mirror dinghy (60kg) and up a ramp so you could almost use string "rated" at 10-20kg!

Add the friction and weight of the trailer or launch trolley but it will be difficult to get rope, webbing or cord that wouldn't be strong enough.
