Mooched the local fields into Lancashire this morning. Took breakfast and lunch. Lovely day, warm and bright. Plenty lapwings, linnets and goldfinch. Saw 5 Sparrowhawks, 2 kestrels, 3 buzzards and a peregrine! A snipe was cool, twisting and turning as it flew. Sloes were ripe, and we couldn’t resist a few damsons - ripe and just about sweet enough to eat. Five coma butterflies on one bramble. And loads of hawkers and a big dragonfly on some ponds. Huge skein of Canada geese. Heron and gadwall on a reedy pond. Chiffchaffs still singing. Swallows heading south - about 20 in small groups. Not seen any pinkfeet yet, but expect I will soon enough. I think autumn will arrive with a bang in next few days. Nearly forgot: a kingfisher! Never get bored with kingfishers. Great crested grebe as well. And a cormorant. Oh, big flock long tailed tits.
