Diego Maradona has just been reported as dead at the age of 60. A great footballer but sounds like a sad decline into poor health and an early death.

Shame, he really was the GOAT. Single handedly dragging Napoli and Argentina to titles, at a time when defenders were still allowed to launch forwards into orbit....

His battle with Claudio Gentile (my absolute favourite footballer) was legendary!

Incidentally I did genuinely enjoy his little cameo in the film "Youth"

Gentile isn’t even Mrs Gentile’s favourite player!
Maradona was incredible in an era when GBH normally meant only a stern talking to by the ref.

What about Mike English?

In reply to Blue Straggler:

Brilliant, I'm stealing that

Why? Whenever he would get a yellow card he would politely smile at the referee, fold his hands, and gently bow...

And since I used to play pub league centre back back in the dark ages, and was also always better against the man than against the ball, he is my all time hero!

But seriously, the Italian WC success in 1982 was much more to do with Gentile and his accomplices at the back than Paolo Rossi up front, who, as usual, got all the accolades.

RIP to Scotland's greatest ever footballer.

This film by Emir Kusturica may be of interest:

I loved what he did for Naples. Allowing the little people to experience the big time. He is still worshipped there and walking round the city a few years ago his influence was still evident. Flawed in so many ways but that goal against us after the hand of God incident, that was just exquisite.

An equaliser from the hand of god........

Reputedly on a church poster in Liverpool back in the day:

Jesus Saves!

scrawled beneath

'but St John scores on the rebound!'
