Spoof Numbers

So the telephone scammers now seem to be aware that many people are now wary of withheld numbers or international call on their caller display. Consequently they are resorting to spoofing numbers so that a false but apparently legitimate number appears on the display.

Many people I have spoken to are now, like ourselves, wising up to this tactic and letting their answer phone cut in if the number is not recognised. If they leave no message(they always seem to disconnect midway through the initial answer phone message) we then block the number. Will the scammers get wise to this and what will their next ploy be?

The next scam will be tailor made scams via online communities, using replies targeted at the victim using info data mined by AI.

I run training on this and have a competition for new customers. The prize is an escorted expedition to the Himalaya. You can join the course by send £100 to my Western Union account. It will teach you how to avoid these new online scams.

Hilarious fun.   You call someone and they think its someone else.

Oh how my sides split laughing at their confusion simply the funniest thing ever.

Right I'm off to go play postman's knock .............

How does this Western Union thing work?

When my friend was scammed a couple of weeks ago, she got excellent Customer Service from Talk Talk.  One feature that they set up was Call Screening for all mobile phones.  When I called her, the Screening service asked me to state my name before connecting me to my friend.

The service seemed to work.  I have to say that Talk Talk stepped up to the mark and helped my friend very quickly over this issue.

You block the number of everyone who chooses not to leave a message on your answerphone?

I guess that it might work if you only have a very limited number of people that call you but I can see an obvious flaw in this tactic.

Not if you don't recognise the number and the caller doesn't leave a message.

I would hazard a guess that 99% of genuine callers would leave a message and identify themselves.

Not that new, but watch out for spoofing to display your local geographic code at the start of number to fool you into thinking it’s a local call. Regularly get them. I wonder if the spammers do this as they can get past a lot of call blockers by pretending to be a local number and the householder is more likely to answer thinking it’s a local caller.

Based on personal experience I'd say that you are way to high with your estimate of 99%.

Yes, this whathappened to my brotjher in law when a scammer tried to get him to pay "outstanding tax" with itune vouchers. The call appeared to originate from Manchester which is about 30-40 miles from him.
