I found this shell in the river Don.

Is it a wild living river whelk or the remains of someone's dinner?

Reckon someone's found it on the coast and lobbed it in the Don.

In reply to Dan Arkle:

There are no freshwater whelks in the UK.  Someone's thrown it in the river.!!

The few species of freshwater snails we have in the UK do not remotely resemble the Whelk you have.

Thanks, I suspected as much but my googling was inconclusive.

Possibly washed out of building materials- dredged gravels etc,

Did you hear about the oyster that went to a nightclub and pulled a mussel?
