no images (just question marks) on UKC (mac)

Actually this has been happening for a little while and I've been too lazy to look into it.. but on the UKC homepage, and every other topic page (new, articles, gear etc) on UKC I just get question marks and no pictures/images. Adverts and the photo page are unaffected. I've messaged UKC who haven't replied. I presume its an update / change to UKC software... but any idea how I sort it so that my mac gets images again on UKC/ What do I need to check on my mac to check compatibility? Thanks

Hi Simon,

I've just checked my emails and found your message. Sorry I missed it before.

We changed the way images were delivered recently to a more modern format but it should be backwards compatible. Could you let me know your MacOS / Safari version please?

Apologies for jumping in, I'm having the same problem. OS 10.15.7, Safari 15.6.1. Went wonky a few weeks ago.

In reply to TechnoJim:

Thanks, I see Safari supports the WebP image format from version 14 but only on MacOS 11 and above, otherwise it's Safari 16+

I'll investigate why the fallback to JPEG isn't working though. Thanks for highlighting it.

Hi Paul,

Mine is MacOS 10.15.7

Safari 15.6.1

(Same as Jim's!)

Thanks

In reply to Simonfarfaraway:

This should hopefully be sorted now. There was something stopping the JPEG fallback images working.

Nice one - it's working on most of the images but not all, the smaller ones in particular are still mostly little blue question marks.

Hi,

Erm... still not working. I've cleared cookies/history and restarted everything. Thanks

In reply to Simonfarfaraway:

I got an install of Firefox v64 running and found a second bug. Hopefully good now.

I haven't touched front end web development (hobby) for several years. I remember how painful it was back then getting basic stuff to work on so many different browsers.

I can't image what it must be like these days.

In reply to montyjohn:

I think generally, it's actually easier these days than it used to be tbh. We don't support Internet Explorer anymore and pretty much all the browsers use the same Webkit browser engine apart from Firefox. Safari usually do something weird now and again but this problem was due to 2 typos in my code :/

I didn't have any device old enough to test the fallback images before. The WebP images worked fine on my 2014 MacBook but it's up to date on software updates.

This site is great for seeing device support: https://caniuse.com/?search=webp
