Really interesting. Replacing the eye probably accelerated the hook failure by providing a fresh edge for the hook to fret against. Unintended consequences and all that.

Flabbergasting.

"zooming in even closer, you can see something odd about the way the C hook broke off. inspect it with the eye of a materials engineer. what do you see?"  - I tried and my answer is "some worn, rusty metal".  Not it turns out exactly what I'm supposed to see!

I had no idea that major parts of their infrastructure were a century old.  It makes me wonder how old some of the pylons in the UK are now.
