Like Alan Shearer returning to Newcastle or Solzenysten to Russia.

Hardly an escape then - there's enough of them in 'academia'

At least he'd be free to call them out for idiotic bullshitters, though...

Nah, he's perfectly capable of putting up with them, and putting them down when necessary, as he has done several times. His original secondment started back in 2017, and has been extended multiple times, so I dont think he's going through any reason other than Notts Uni want him back.

Are you familiar with dealing with academic administrators?

They cant be as bad as Johnson et al. Surely...?

Worse. For example, I once received two emails from a dean in ten minutes, one of which was about prioritising mental health/preventing burnout, with the second one being my workload allocation for the year totalling 130% FTE.

In reply to ianstevens:

Deans, eh! One layer of beaurocracy that, if it were to be removed, would materially impact the country's green agenda by sparing perhaps 2-3 hectares of forest per week - such is their capacity (still) to generate irrelevant paperwork. In equal measure, productivity would go through the roof.

Did they give you an extra two days of annual leave as a reward for working so hard during the pandemic? To put on the shelf with all the other unused leave entitlement…

I treasure my untaken leave - at least I can only roll over 1 week each year so it does not get embarrasing

Perhaps he should become prime minister - there is likely a job coming up. I always thought he came over as a sensible straightforward type of person, something much needed.

More seriously, I wonder what he will do after his stint as  interim PVC for the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences?

There has never been a better time to draw a cock on it. I don't know what your fields are but right now there will be a PLC out there that will beg you to take their much much more money.

Who's JVT?

In reply to broken spectre:

Jonathan Van-Tam - government employed medical advisor.

It would be good if threads like this actually named their subjects!

Has anyone else watched the Royal Institution Christmas lectures?

JVT give a thorough understanding of the virus. Delivered to mostly secondary school audience with some proper cheesy demo's. Very informative.

I never quite forgave them for the year they gave them to Kevin Warwick.  He defined a low point re: publicity seeking, morally bankrupt university professors for me until Covid and the CEBM rose to prominence.

Had no idea JVT had done some, I should go and watch them.

That’s the problem with academics.. so entitled.

It seemed significant that JVT just left without any comment along the lines of how he had been delighted and honoured to be working at the heart of government ......
