My cousin has texted me to say the internet proof of age rule, supposed to have come in about now, is scrapped/on hold, something to do with EU legislation. Can find nothing on web about it.

Anybody? Is it coming in or not? Thanks.

I read something on the BBC about it being put on hold again.

I think the MP's suddenly realised that they would become more traceable and identifiable by their verification activity on porn websites.

:-D

Or they did not know enough about the consequences and implementation and made a knee jerk reaction. An Analogy would be Brexit.

If there was a test case, would it stand up in court?

A purely UK law being delayed by the stupidity* of the idea.

*difficult to implement in a way that is not trivially easy to bypass or massively intrusive.

The privacy issues (tissues?) are such that it might violate EU law but main problem so far is technical stupidity of legislators thinking this was a practical idea.

I've not heard of any EU involvement so far which is probably why you didn't find it if you searched for EU internet proof of age law.

The BBC article suggest the biggest hangup is a commercial one -  the primary age verification company  also being an owner of porn sites.

The whole point is to stop children accessing inappropriate content  - not sure this will ever be achievable - as a work around will soon be found by a determined kid.  Stolen IDs will be passed around whatsapp the moment the ID wall comes down.

I see that it will only apply to sites which have at least a third of their content being adult content.

I wonder how quickly there will be websites hosting 33% adult content  and 67% of something completely unrelated.

Wow. I hadn't even thought about how sites could legally circumvent the intent of the law with zero inconvenience to users.
