Hi   I am giving a talk on forces in climbing as part of science week at a local primary school to years 5&6 (10,11 ish).

I've got a rough plan (very happy to get any ideas) of what to talk about and some live demos of friction etc  but I am looking for a video of a big whipper to kick off. Something that's clear, without swearing,  a short clip (i can probably extract one), on bolts,   I've been looking on Youtube but nothing grabs me yet

any other suggestions very welcome

I was asked a few years ago to give several talks on climbing. The big hit was placing an ice screw into a block of ice in an old ice cream container

Well, not on bolts, but the fall at the start of Hard Grit is one of the most memorable https://rockandice.com/videos/weekend-whippers/weekend-whipper-hard-grit-th...

nice but probably not for this talk ...

He walked away, I think.
you would have to work out the additional force for your belayer jumping off though

The one of Franco on (or rather "off") that route at Tintwistle was quite impressive.

There are plenty of falls on this;

Worth watching anyway, good film!

not a video, but the 3rd picture in this article is a pretty good illustration of falling:

Again not on bolts and does have an f-word from the cameraman, so fails on every criteria, but Nico Faveresse on/off the Cromlech should have a notable mention.

thanks the second one is quite good (seen the first before)

In reply to Gavin:

yeah it not very clear from a projecting point of view, with poor contrast  and quite small, but super impressive

Get some Lego men. ( may  have to weight with plasticine) tie elastic band to them and get them to investigate how high above a point they can fall from without hitting ground. Kids love doing stuff.  Could record some numbers and gets the idea of trialing things.. that's what I'd do any way

In reply to Mattyk:

good idea in a workshop scenario but dont think it'd scale so welll in the time I have. GlenMore lodge had on the wall something similar but i cant remember the details but its a nice idea (and i maybe able to get some stuff for another  time). I do intend to get them to do a few things  during the session not all talk from me. thanks for ideas

I saw one not so long ago of Edu Marin taking something absurd like a 9 meter fall onto a bolt (because the original equippers were stingy or something). Probably fits your bill...search YouTube?

Here you go this fits your bill!

Here's Nico Favresse on Nightmayer.   (Though contains the odd swear word.)

Then there's James McHaffie at Nesscliffe  (Also contains the odd swear word.)

I can't find it at the moment, but I'm fairly sure the James McHaffie fall made it to the BBC News website and was suitably sanitised.

In reply to Paul Sagar:

thanks for that, i had that on my list -

In reply to Coel Hellier:

There's a good one on The Big Issue film about John Dunn where he takes a big fall from the end of a route at Malham. The whole film is on YouTube.
