Happy independence day

I'd like to wish happy independence day on Feb 1 to all the erstwhile Labour supporters who voted Tory yesterday. I suspect it will be the one and only time they celebrate it. By Feb 2021 I feel pretty sure they'll realise they've been duped and their lives will be no better than they are today. The government will take this win as evidence of support for their policies of the last 9 years. The NHS will continue to be starved, as will those claiming UC. Areas outside the SE will continue to be starved of investment. Schools will still be underfunded. Leopards don't change their spots nor Tories their core beliefs. I'm old enough to remember Thatcher quoting St Francis on the steps of No 10. How did that work out? More recently May said similar things about the just-managing, though nothing about the not managing. How did that work out?

I'm getting married 1st Feb, it's going to be strange a bittersweet day but one I can spend away from the news with my phone turned off.

Unfortunately people who are duped - are likely to be duped a while longer than that. They'll get told that its their own fault that they aren't benefiting from the new world.

That is a very odd thing to say. But congratulations and best wishes.  I hope you can put all your concerns aside and move forward positively.

And under the new Patel Citizenship Act those whose fault it is deemed to be, without right of appeal, might not achieve the points required to retain citizenship, even if born here ...

I believe traditionally that's the time when you no longer need to worry about the Withdrawal Agreement.

The traditional thing for governments like this one to do in such circumstances is to find another group to blame for the problems, and convince the suffering people that it's that group's fault.

They've probably not used up "The EU" as the target for blame yet; when they do, they'll find another target.

That's when there's a risk of it getting very dangerous, depending on how things pan out.

(And congratulations, jkarran.)

Not really, it'll be a happy day for me personally but the end of a long hard fight I lost with very real consequences.

I hope so but that really depends which of us is right about the realisation of your dream.

Well, the second word is right.

I think you’ve been neglecting your Ladybird History Book. Here is a selection of things done by Labour which just might have improved the lives of the working class.

Attlee, 1940s: Put into effect many of the demands of the Beveridge Report – NHS, National Insurance (Sickness and Unemployment pay), secondary education for all up to 14 years.

Wilson, 1960s and 1970s: The Open University. Many progressive social reforms like suspension of death penalty and decriminalisation of what gay men did in private (I know you wouldn’t approve of these, but you’re in a minority)

Callaghan, 1970s: introduced capital gains tax, Race Relations Act

Blair, 1997 – 2007: Minimum Wage, Sure Start, reduced pensioners poverty numbers from 3 million to 2 million, the Good Friday agreement, tax credits, improved the NHS hugely (reduced waiting lists massively).

I don’t know if you’re just ignorant of all these things or bizarrely believe they haven’t improved the lives of working class people.

I would also point out that all these reforms were opposed by the Tory opposition of the time, and it’s noticeable that they haven’t really tried to reverse any of this progress.

You should be out celebrating the conservative landslide not being a provocative tw*t on UKC.

Do you mean by a Labour government?

Do I really need to point out that they haven’t been in government for ten years?

No. The OP said "areas outside the SE will continue to be starved of investment" and I am challenging the perception that the SE is somehow awash with cash.

So examples from any government are welcome.

Looking at regional government spending in various ways - per person, per school child or infrastructure, the South East always seems to be at the bottom of the list!
