Is there any way to encourage wild orchids into a lawn? Legal ones only of course - I'm not going to go digging any up.

My lawn is ex field and I don't think it's ever been 'improved' so should provide the right sort of habitat. Am I allowed to remove seed from wild orchids? And if so would it be futile to just scatter it about?

In reply to pasbury:

Orchids have a complex life cycle. They have a relationship with soil fungi and can have an erratic season. On established sites they can appear in their hundreds and then nothing for the next ten years. They will show up in road verges but be impossible to propagate in the field next door

They are very fussy about soil chemistry and each species has different requirements. Some, like bee orchid, will disappear as a site becomes established. Others will only appear after a hundred years of neglect.

I'm not saying you can't  you understand.

But.........

That is pretty much what I expected.

All I know is that I would be exceptionally happy even if only one common spotted orchid appeared!
